History Of Beecroft Lawn Tennis Club Inc

Early Begininngs

In 1895 the Kennedya Tennis Club was formed at Henry Perdriau’s private court in Copeland Road , Beecroft. The Club was named after the red flowering vine which grew profusely in the district. In 1898 when membership became too large for the one court, the Trustees of The Village Green were requested to lease at a nominal rental about half an acre of land at the southern end of the Green for two courts. Upon agreement to the lease, the Club signed a contract with Mr. George Willis in August 1898 to construct two gravel courts at a cost of nearly £50. Play commenced on these two courts in mid-November 1898. By 1902 three courts and a small pavilion catered for between 35 and 40 regular players.

On 3 May 1911 the Cumberland Argus Newspaper reported that the Beecroft Tennis Club ladies tennis team of Miss Murray and Miss Searle defeated a Burwood pair in a tournament at Burwood.

On 10 January 1912 the Beecroft Tennis Club ran an open tournament in which 16 pairs entered.

In mid November 1916 a Red Cross Tennis Competition was held on the courts of the Beecroft and Cheltenham Tennis Clubs. Sixty pairs took part and £25 26s was raised.

In March 1917 the Trustees of The Village Green agreed to lease to the Beecroft Tennis Club sufficient land to convert the current 3 gravel courts to turf and to construct two new grass courts. The estimated cost of £150 50s was borrowed and the remainder was put up by Club members. The Club was to pay a rental of £5 for the use of this land.

In June 1919 the Beecroft Tennis Club put on entertainment to raise funds to carry out improvements to the grounds.

Club Champions

The first recorded Ladies Open Singles Champion was Miss Murray in 1913 and the first Mens Open Singles Champion was A. C. Holt in 1916. In 1917 Alan S. North won the Mens Open Singles. Alan North won the NSW Mens Open Doubles in 1927. Alan North died in 1997 aged 101 years.

Historical Documents

When Peter Boyce’s mother died some years ago in Beecroft, he cleaned out her house and came upon a hand written ledger book detailing all the receipts and expenditures of the Club from the 1919-20 year to the 1937-38 year. Peter donated this book to the Club. This book documents that the loan taken out in 1917 to returf the courts was repaid in 1919-20.

In 1919-20 the men’s subscription fees were £3 0s 6d and the ladies fees £1 10s 0d. Receipts were £334 13s 8d, expenditure £263 2s 9d giving a profit of £71 10s 11d.

Current Day Clubhouse
Badge Competition

The Club commenced playing men’s Badge in 1921 – the financial statement at 31 July 1921 has the entry “Affiliation Capitation and Badge Team Fees £5 6s”. The Club won its first Badge in 1922 in men’s grade 2/2. The Ladies commenced playing Badge in 1929.

The current Clubhouse was built around 1960 during the Presidency of Jack Austin and was opened by Alex Colvin President of the Lawn Tennis Association. Cliff Gibson crafted the sets board, which is unique, in the Clubhouse.

Schubert Shield

Alan Schubert played tennis at the Beecroft Lawn Tennis Club and at the Cheltenham Recreation Club and made many friends at both Clubs. Upon his death, the Schubert family donated the Schubert Shield, in his memory, for an annual tennis match between the Beecroft and Cheltenham Clubs. The first Schubert Shield match was held in 1961.

Club Centenary 1998

Up until the end of 1997 the Club had won every men’s Badge grade except the top grade 1/1.

In the Centenary Year of 1998 the men’s team No. 1 won Grade 1/1 to complete the matrix. The team comprised Craig Edwards (Captain), John Toohey, David Parslow, Brendon Rose and Rod Niccol. This team went on to win Grade 1/1 for the following two years.

At the Badge Presentation Night on 19 September 1998 the Club was presented with the Norm Duncan Trophy for the best and strongest men’s Club for the 1998 season. The Thursday Ladies Badge team received the trophy for the friendliest Ladies team in the competition.

The first function in the 1998 Centenary Year was the Ladies Centenary Luncheon held at the Beecroft Bowling Club on 21 August 1998 – a most enjoyable event of reminiscence.

The main Centenary Celebration Luncheon took place on Sunday 15 November 1998 when 175 present and past members of the Club gathered at the Garden Suite, Oatlands House. Geoff Pollard AM, President of Tennis Australia , proposed the Toast to the Club and John Whittaker, President of Tennis NSW, presented a Certificate of Merit to the Club. Other guests included Mal Bergmann, Deputy President of Tennis NSW, Barry Masters, Chief Executive Tennis NSW, Paul Wigney, President MGCCA, Councillor Stephen Pringle, Mayor of Hornsby Shire Council and Patron of the Club, Life Members, Past Presidents and all partners. Long time Patron and Life Member Joan Austin OAM and President Graham Gann jointly cut the Centenary Cake. It was a wonderful occasion for all present.

The Hornsby Shire Council (which was founded 8 years later in 1906) presented to the Club a Certificate recognising 100 years of service to the community.
